There are some places that understand ceremony. Places that know how to hold history and hope in the very same moment. Annapolis is one of those places.I say this as a Philadelphian who grew up on the streets where our Declaration of Independence was written, where Ben Franklin published, and where my forefathers were buried at Christ Church alongside the great patriots who helped craft our early nation.
Commissioning Week at the United States Naval Academy still leaves me awe struck every single year.
You can feel it before the week officially begins. Families arrive carrying garment bags and bouquets. Restaurants fill with proud parents and grandparents. White uniforms appear everywhere you look, crisp and unmistakable. Then comes the unmistakable roar overhead as the Blue Angels begin their practice flights over the Severn River.
If you have never experienced it, it is hard to explain.
The Blue Angels do not simply fly over Annapolis. They command your attention. Conversations stop mid sentence. People step out of shops and restaurants onto sidewalks. Boats pause in the harbor. Complete strangers look up together with the kind of wonder we usually only see in children.
But underneath all the excitement and celebration, there is something much deeper happening.Commissioning Week is really about service.
It is about watching young men and women close one chapter of their lives and step into extraordinary responsibility. These Midshipmen are not simply graduating from college. They are becoming leaders in the United States military. They are choosing careers defined by discipline, sacrifice, and duty, qualities that deserve our respect now more than ever.
One of my favorite moments in Annapolis happens quietly, long before the crowds fully gather for the day. Around 8 a.m., downtown seems to pause as the unmistakable sound of the National Anthem carries from the Naval Academy up the hill and to our store on State Circle. If you are nearby, you stop almost instinctively. Conversations soften. People stand still. For a brief moment, the entire town shares the same reflection.
It is a reminder that service asks for far more than most of us ever see.
These young men and women give their time, their comfort, and often years away from family in service to something greater than themselves. Some will ultimately give their lives. In a world constantly demanding our attention, that daily moment of reverence feels grounding, humbling, and deeply American.
As a business owner with Welcome Home stores in Annapolis, Easton, and Chestertown, I have had the privilege of meeting families from all over the country during this week. Some arrive bursting with pride. Others are emotional in ways they did not expect. Many are exhausted after years of sacrifice and hard work, both theirs and their Midshipman’s. What always strikes me is how this community wraps itself around them.
Annapolis knows how to show up.
Locals make room. Businesses welcome visitors with patience and pride. Neighbors gather along the water to watch the flights. Veterans share stories. Parents beam through tears. Children wave tiny flags along the sidewalks. Even the traffic somehow feels more meaningful during this week.
There is a collective understanding here that what is happening matters.
Especially as Memorial Day approaches.
The timing of Commissioning Week alongside Memorial Day feels profoundly fitting. One honors those beginning a life of service, while the other reminds us of those who never made it home from theirs.
That contrast gives the entire week a certain gravity.
At Welcome Home, we talk a lot about the meaning of home. Home is comfort. Home is belonging. Home is the place people fight to protect. During Commissioning Week, I am reminded that many of the freedoms we enjoy every day exist because generations of service members chose duty over ease.
That realization never gets old.
So whether you are a lifelong Annapolitan or visiting for the very first time, I hope you take a moment this week to pause amid the excitement. Look up when the Blue Angels pass overhead. Stand still for the National Anthem in the morning air. Clap a little louder for the graduates. Thank a military family. Remember what Memorial Day asks us to remember.
Because in a world that often moves too fast, Commissioning Week still manages to stop us in your tracks and remind us who we are at our best.
